Every other brand sources the best liquid it can and puts it in whichever bottle exists. anew built the bottle first. Then spent two years finding water good enough to go in it.
The drive that started it
In 2015, Jayden pulled into a gas station on a drive from Auckland to Wellington, out of water. Four fridges of it, all sold on purity, all in plastic made from oil. He could not get past the questions: why does this require creating something that outlives me, why is 750ml five dollars when it is cents from the tap, and where is this water even from. That seven hour drive set the next ten years.
The failure that mattered
The first attempt failed, and this matters. anew's first bottle was compostable, designed to break down in 27 days, faster than an orange peel. anew built collection boxes engraved "This is not a bin", six compost sites across New Zealand, two of which became urban farms growing organic food and feeding families. It worked beautifully, and only in New Zealand. Every other market failed on infrastructure.
Jayden killed the product he loved, with one new rule: it cannot depend on infrastructure that does not exist yet. It has to work in the world as it is, in every market, on the day it lands.
Compostable stopped being the goal. A bottle designed to be kept became the goal. Reuse is the best form of recycling we can do.
The bottle
Plant-based renewable feedstocks instead of oil. Bottle and cap both. Not glass. Not aluminium. Not steel. Not petroleum-based plastic. Dishwasher safe, designed to be refilled, independently tested with no microplastics detected, made without BPA, BPS and other bisphenol's, PFAS, phthalates and nonylphenol. Carbon negative to produce.
Most customers get months out of theirs. Plenty get years. The most common feedback is that they lose it before it gives in.

The water
The bottle took years. So did the water. The standard was simple: the best natural source we could find. Not the easiest, not the closest, not one that needed reverse osmosis or additives to be good enough.
Reverse osmosis strips everything from a natural source and starts at around 6.5 pH, which is acidic. Then minerals get added back in. anew has more faith in nature than that.
In New Zealand, a private well, naturally alkaline, leaving the ground at 9.2 pH with no treatment, no ionisation, nothing added. Most alkaline waters raise their pH with baking soda. This one does not need to.
In Australia, we are still looking for a source we are proud of. New Zealand water ships in the meantime — which is exactly why the search continues. Good enough is not the standard.

Do anew® bottles shed microplastics?
No. You can find our independent lab report on our website that shows anew bottles do not shed microplastics into the water. Unlike plastic, glass (via the lid) and aluminium bottles (which are lined with plastic) have been shown to shed microplastics.

Is this just another bottle?
One million plastic bottles are sold around the world every minute. We all know this is an issue given what plastic is made from and what happens to it after we finish with it. The anew® bottle tackles some of the main environmental and health problems other bottles present. Finite resources, high carbon footprints, known chemicals of concern, single-use. It's anew® way forward.

Is this greenwashing?
No. We all know we need to stop using fossil fuels — so we provide an option made from renewable resources. Most people also agree that we should stop single use packaging. So we are placing a reusable product in the single use market to assist with this transition. When bottles are returned, we make them into new bottles in NZ. Our bottle and cap are the same material, making our whole product a mono-material product. We believe this is the most sustainable solution available right now. We are also constantly developing improvements and new materials as technology catches up.

Are you just adding more bottles to the world?
No. By providing a reusable option, we hope to see fewer bottles in the world. We are providing a choice away from single-use, finite-resource bottles and exposure to micro-plasitcs, BPA, BPS and PFAS
